University College, informally known as Castle, is the oldest constituent college of the University of Durham in England. Centred on Durham Castle on Palace Green, it was founded in 1832 by William van Mildert, Bishop of Durham.
Durham University has 17 colleges, of which University College is the oldest, founded in 1832. The newest college is South, founded in 2020. The last single-sex college, St Mary's, became mixed in 2005 with the admittance of male undergraduates. One college, Ustinov, admits only postgraduates .
Location. We’re privileged to be based in our magnificent Castle building and excellent City centre location: situated on Durham's World Heritage Site opposite the Cathedral and based primarily in a Norman fortress, our stunning castle is truly unique amongst Durham University's colleges.
About Us. As one of the larger hill colleges with a diverse community of over 1500 students, staff and mentors from all over the world, Van Mildert offers a relaxed and lively environment with a wide range of clubs and societies on offer.
All students at Durham University are members of one of our colleges. Colleges are residential communities that offer student-led opportunities and events in drama, music, sport and volunteering, as well as a wide range of other activities and facilities.
