He bore arms in the War for Independence and served as a Delegate to the Continental Congress, attorney general of Delaware, and Federal judge.
Gunning Bedford, Jr., represented Delaware at the constitutional convention of 1787 and signed the Constitution. A spokesman for small-state positions, he vigorously advocated equal representation of the states in Congress; he also argued for easy removal of the president and against the veto power.
