Atalanta eventually married a man named either Hippomenes or Melanion after he had proven himself by beating her in a footrace. Atalanta had a son named Parthenopaeus who fought with the Seven against Thebes.

A skilled hunter and warrior, she distinguished herself among the Argonauts and drew first blood during the Calydonian Boar Hunt. One famous myth told of how Atalanta would only marry a man who could best her in a footrace.

Two of the Centaurs, Pholus and Chiron , were actually friendly to mortals, but they were the exception that proved the rule: for the Greeks, the Centaurs symbolized everything that stood against culture and civilization.

23 de mar. de 2023 · In another tradition, Ladon guarded the apples from Aphrodite, who had picked three apples to help her mortal favorite Hippomenes seduce Atalanta. In addition to tending the garden, the Hesperides were sometimes said to feed Ladon as well.

Hesiod is therefore later in date than Homer since he represents Hippomenes as stripped when contending with Atalanta. (1–7) “Then straightway there rose up against him the trim-ankled maiden (Atalanta), peerless in beauty: a great throng stood round about her as she gazed fiercely, and wonder held all men as they looked upon her.
