” The woman of which Suffolk spoke so highly was his duchess, Alice Chaucer. A granddaughter of the poet Geoffrey Chaucer, Alice was born around 1404, probably at the manor of Ewelme in Oxfordshire, and was the only child of Thomas Chaucer and Maud Burghersh.

Alice was born c.1404, probably at Ewelme, the only child of Thomas Chaucer (c.1367-1434) and his wife Maud Burghersh (c.1379-1437).

In 1444, Suffolk negotiated a marriage between Henry VI and Margaret of Anjou. William and Alice traveled to France to escort the new Queen to England, where she stayed as a guest in their palace at Ewelme.
