The location appears to have been chosen to have most impact as it is the way in to the oldest part of the Univesrity - the Old Quad - designed by Alfred Waterhouse.

The cost of the build was £22,000 and was raised partially by public appeal and served as the university library until the opening of the Brotherton Library.
