Katherine Mansfield naceu nunha familia socialmente prominente de orixe colonial, en Wellington, Nova Zelandia. Viviu cos seus pais, dúas irmás máis vellas, unha avoa e dúas tías adolescentes. Tivo tamén unha irmá máis nova e un irmán que naceu en 1894. O seu pai, Harold Beauchamp, era banqueiro e primo da escritora Elizabeth von Arnim.
