With his first wife, Lilian Augusta de Havilland Fontaine, De Havilland was the father of actresses Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine, both of whom were born in Tokyo while he resided there. In 1919 she took both girls to live in California.

Santa Barbara (AP)--Actress Lilian August Fontaine, whose daughters Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland, successfully followed in her footsteps, is dead at 88. Mrs. Fontaine, who also taught dramatics, died at her home here Thursday following a brief illness.
