Fano was a leader in information theory, networks, and time-sharing systems. He co-founded Project MAC, the predecessor of CSAIL, and influenced the development of modern computing technologies.
Robert Fano was a Ford Professor of Engineering at MIT and the founder of Project MAC, the precursor of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. He was born in Italy and received his degrees in Electrical Engineering from MIT in 1941 and 1947.

He did part of his undergraduate work at the School of Engineering in Torino, Italy, before coming to the United States in 1939 as a student of Electrical Engineering at M.I.T.
