  5. Francis began the study of civil engineering around 1832, and by 1840 was employed by the Grand Junction Railway. In 1841 he was appointed locomotive superintendant, at GJR, and in 1843 he was transferred to the new works in Crewe; he stayed there until his resignation in 1857
