His surrender at the Siege of Yorktown (1781) signalled the end of the war. As governor general of India (1786–93, 1805), he reformed the civil service and defeated Tipu Sahib of Mysore.

He served as Master of the Buckhounds between 1807 and 1823. Cornwallis was the only son of General Charles Cornwallis, 1st Marquess Cornwallis, by his wife Jemima (née Jones).
