Efforts to develop townships as tourist destinations and to create jobs have met with some measure of success; the global awareness that resulted from the South African application to host the 2004 Olympics and the successful organisation of the FIFA World Cup in 2010 also benefited the townships.
Townships in South Africa have always been a point of curiosity for me. Not only have I wanted to visit South Africa for more than a decade, but since studying a degree in International Development, I have developed an interest in understanding how and why such disparity exists around the world.
