We’ll be telling you more as the year unfolds.To kick things off, we decided to convene a group of artists, DJs, critics, and various other people within the music industry to come up with a new list of “100 Essential Folk Songs.”

One of the most famous is The Kingston Trio’s “Where Have All the Flowers Gone.” A protest song about the Vietnam War, it’s one of the best folk songs because it goes deeper than its surface message with its hope for peace and unity.

First taped in Fyvie, Aberdeenshire on July 16, 1951, less than 10 versions have been recorded in the time separating that initial session and Iona Fyfe’s own gorgeous rendition, released on her East collection in 2016.
