But they are a good place to start for anyone who wants to learn more about music from the height of the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s in America. Some of these songs were adapted from old hymns. Others were originals. All of them have helped inspire millions.

American Folk Songs is a 1948 album by Jo Stafford. The original release featured six songs on three 78-RPM discs. It was released as a long-playing record in 1950, with two additional songs. Since the 1962 re-release, the album has featured twelve popular folk songs. [2] [3] The Saturday Review described the album as "of its own excellence." [4]
