During the Polish–Muscovite War (1605–1618), Polish–Lithuanian forces reached Moscow and installed the impostor False Dmitriy I in 1605, then supported False Dmitry II in 1607. The decisive moment came when a combined Russian-Swedish army was routed by the Polish forces under hetman Stanisław Żółkiewski at the Battle of Klushino on 4 July [ O.S. 24 June] 1610.
Dmitry Ivanovich was the youngest son of Ivan IV (the Terrible), whose death cast suspicion on imperial adviser Boris Godunov. A series of pretenders claiming to be Dmitry later contended for the Muscovite throne. Dmitry was the only son of Ivan IV and Maria Fedrorovna Nagaya, the tsar’s seventh.
Religious tension was a big factor as to why tsar Feodor wasn't elected king of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, why Poland-Lithuania's false Dmitry, and later Prince Wladislaw wasn't accepted as tsar; and why the Cossacks rebelled against Poland-Lithuania, ultimately throwing their lot in with Russia.
