Much of the land then was covered by lakes, estuaries, and swamps and exposed to the incursions of the sea, and the inhabitants lived mostly on terpen , or man-made mounds.

2 de fev. de 2020 · The earliest ancestors of modern Frisians were the Frisii - an ancient Germanic tribe that inhabited roughly the same region as their modern descendants. This is the so-called delta of the Rhine, Meuse, and Scheldt rivers, a region which contains many islands and is generally a low-lying area.
In prehistoric times of uncertain date, the tribal Frisians migrated to the North Sea coastal region between the mouth of the Rhine River (at Katwijk, north of The Hague) and the mouth of the Ems River and ousted the resident Celts.

Frisians appear to have been among the Germanic groups who invaded Britain during the so-called Migration period (Völkerwanderung), as Angles and Saxons travelled from their home base through Frisian territory in what is now northern Germany and central Netherlands.

Frisian is a member of the North Sea Branch of the Western Germanic Family of Indo-European languages and bears strong linguistic resemblance to both English and Dutch. Most speakers are bilingual in Dutch. There are three dialects: West, Eastern, and Northern Frisian. Frisian has an official orthography in the Netherlands.
Etymology. The contemporary name for the region stems from Latin Frisii, an ethnonym used for a group of ancient tribes in modern-day Northwestern Germany, possibly being a loanword of Proto-Germanic * frisaz, meaning "curly, crisp", presumably referring to the hair of the tribesmen.
