A subsidiary alliance, in South Asian history, was a tributary alliance between an Indian state and a European East India Company. Under this system, an Indian ruler who formed a treaty (agreement) with the company in question would be provided with protection against any external attacks.

Subsidiary Alliance was basically a treaty between the British East India Company and the Indian princely states, by virtue of which the Indian kingdoms lost their sovereignty to the English. It also was a major process that led to the building of the British Empire in India.

The main effect of this treaty was to take control of the Princely States as the Indian Kingdoms lost sovereignty to the British Company.
