Classically the term "republic" encompassed both democracies and aristocracies.

I keep hearing people say the U.S. is a Democracy, but I've only ever understood it to be a Republic, even after research. Then a lot of sites will say "well, we're actually a Democratic Republic." Does that just mean we're a Republic with a little bit of Democracy mixed in?
