The calibre on the barrel is .450 and on the other side is says .478. 1 de abr. de 2015 · Even though the self-contained cartridge was now the military norm worldwide, the Monkey Tail was so highly thought of that Westley Richards was able to keep the system alive for a good number of years. A good quantity of Monkey Tails were ordered by South Africans in the late 1870s and used to effect during the First Boer War of 1881.

This carbine is a capping breechloader which uses a paper cartridge and percussion cap. The nickname 'Monkey Tail', comes from the distinct shape of the receiver which is raised to enable the cartridge to be inserted.
