O USS Nautilus (SSN-571) foi o primeiro submarino movido a energia nuclear do mundo e entrou em serviço em 1954. Nomeado para o submarino fictício no clássico Vinte Mil Léguas Submarinas de Júlio Verne, bem como vários navios anteriores da Marinha dos EUA, o Nautilus inovou em projeto e propulsão de submarinos.
On April 11, 1986, eighty-six years to the day after the birth of the Submarine Force, Historic Ship NAUTILUS, joined by the Submarine Force Museum, opened to the public as the first and finest exhibit of its kind in the world, providing an exciting, visible link between yesterday’s Submarine Force and the Submarine Force of tomorrow.
The mythical submarine had a double hull, a length of 230 feet, a beam of 26 feet and a draft of 24 feet. The real-life NAUTILUS, with a single hull, is longer at 324 feet but nearly matches Verne’s beam and draft at 28 and 26 feet, respectively. Both had floodable tanks and hydroplanes.
