Under the Greenwood Tree: A Rural Painting of the Dutch School is a novel by the English writer Thomas Hardy, published anonymously in 1872. It was Hardy's second published novel, and the first of what was to become his series of Wessex novels .

Primarily, Under the Greenwood Tree revives the rural environment of Hardy's childhood, and in Mellstock, the tranter's cottage resembles the Hardy family's home: It was a long low cottage with a hipped roof of thatch, having dormer windows breaking up into the eaves, a chimney standing in the middle of the ridge and another at each end.
