The family's estate derived from Oliver's great-great-grandfather Morgan ap William, a brewer from Glamorgan who settled at Putney and married Katherine Cromwell (born 1482), the sister of Thomas Cromwell, who would become the famous chief minister to Henry VIII.

He played a leading role in bringing Charles I to trial and execution, conquering the royalist armies, and championing religious freedom. He was also a controversial public figure who rose from the middle ranks of society and rose to power through his conversion to a strong puritan faith.
