Sibyl Vane, Dorian’s first love, is a young, beautiful actress performing at a cheap theater in London’s East End. She exudes an almost child-like naïveté and wonder about the world, somehow untouched by practical concerns despite her poverty.
A young actress, from a poor family, who performs Shakespeare’s heroines every evening at a low class theater. Dorian falls in love with her performances, but she finds performance paltry in comparison to true love and her acting suffers after her engagement to Dorian. Dorian, in turn, is uninterested in her after she no longer has her art.
Sibyl Vane – a talented actress and singer, she is a beautiful girl from a poor family with whom Dorian falls in love. Her love for Dorian ruins her acting ability, because she no longer finds pleasure in portraying fictional love as she is now experiencing real love in her life.
Dorian’s treatment of Sybil Vane becomes the first cruel action in a series of immoral deeds that tarnishes his soul, and even though he attempts to deflect responsibility for her death by belittling her life, the increasing disfigurement of the portrait reveals his inevitable and continuing corruption.
Lord Henry attempts to comfort Dorian after bringing news of Sibyl Vane’s death. He says that because Sibyl only existed in plays, she never truly lived. Dorian and Lord Henry gain distance from her death by reducing the reality of her life to her professional pursuits.
