Admiral is a military rank, typically the highest or among the highest flag officers in a navy. In the armed forces of the United States and Commonwealth of Nations, an admiral—sometimes clarified as a "full admiral"—is the equivalent of a general in the army or air force.
Admiral is a four-star flag officer in the U.S. Navy, equivalent to the rank of General in the other Armed Services. The rank of Admiral is temporary and generally used only in times of war. Because the five-star Fleet General rank is only used very rarely, Admiral is generally considered the highest rank attainable by officers in the Navy.
In 1944, Congress created the rank Fleet Admiral to be granted to four people. There has been no authorization to use the rank since the World War II era. The table below lists all the standard ranks in the U.S. Navy and their respective pay grades, insignias, abbreviations, and classifications.
