Preparations for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II began the moment she acceded to the throne in February 1952. But it was not until 16 months later, on 2 June 1953, that she was crowned queen. The much-anticipated day began with a procession from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey, the site of English and British coronations since Harold II’s in 1066.
