Sir Peter Lely (14 September 1618 – 7 December 1680) [1] [2] was a painter of Dutch origin whose career was nearly all spent in England, where he became the dominant portrait painter to the court. He became a naturalised British subject and was knighted in 1679.

18 de jan. de 2024 · In 1661 Lely became the Principal Painter of the restored English monarchy; he succeeded in capturing the court's sensuous languor and also assembled one of England's finest art collections. For years Lely had no serious rivals, and he was enormously influential.
