A figura de Orlando é inspirada em Vita Sackville-West, a nobre inglesa com a qual Virginia teve um caso em meados da década de 1920. Quando se conheceram, em dezembro de 1922, Vita estava casada com Harold Nicolson e Virginia com Leonard Woolf. Não podiam ser mais diferentes. A origem de Virginia estava na clas-se média intelectualizada.
