  1. 9 de nov. de 2023 · Pembroke. Tolkien returned to Oxford in 1925 after the First World War and a spell working at the University of Leeds in northern England. He was a Professor of Anglo Saxon (the full title was Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon!) at this Oxford college for around 20 years and this is where he was when the Hobbit and (much of) The Lord of the Rings were written.

Whilst at Oxford he represented Oxford against Cambridge in the long jump at Queen’s Club in 1911 and 1912—winning the event in the former year with a jump of 21 feet 5 inches—as well as competing against teams from Yale and Harvard.

  5. Location, Area, Boundaries, Landform and Setting. Merton lies at the centre of Oxford, 150m south of the High Street, on level ground raised c 3-4m above the level of Merton Field to the south. The c 2ha college is bounded to the north by Merton Street, to the east and south by the city wall, and to the west by Corpus Christi College (qv).
