    The Merton Middle Common Room (MCR)is both a physical place and a corporate community. Members include graduate students, fourth-year undergraduates, and associate members. The MCR is a diverse collection of scholars, representing a range of nationalities, interests and experiences.

Its foundation can be traced back to the 1260s when Walter de Merton , chancellor to Henry III and later to Edward I , first drew up statutes for an independent academic community and established endowments to support it.
