1995–2001: Yourself or Someone Like You and Mad Season
Rob Thomas, Brian Yale, and Paul Doucette were part of the band Tabitha's Secret, which was based in Orlando, Florida, with fellow members Jay Stanley and John Goff, before splitting to start a new band (what was to become Matchbox Twenty). For their third album, More Than You Think You Are, the band used more of a pop punk/pop rock sound. Thomas shared the songwriting efforts with the other band members on several songs. A história do Matchbox 20 começa em meados da década de 90, em Orlando, na Flórida quando o vocalista Rob Thomas conhece Brian Yale (atual baixista) e Paul Doucette (bateria). Antes de formar o Matchbox 20, o trio integrou uma série de bandas, até a entrada de Adam Gaynor (voz e guitarra rítmica) e Kyle Cook (guitarra principal).
O primeiro trabalho da banda norte americana liderada pelo vocalista Rob Thomas, traz excelentes melodias e refrões poderosos. Este, é o caso da primeira faixa do álbum, intitulada "Real World".
