Both games make up the third installment of the Mario & Sonic series. New sports, such as soccer (association football) and equestrian, along with other athletic events, debut in the Wii version.

Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games marks the first installment of the series released on the Nintendo 3DS, and was released roughly three months after its home console counterpart on the Wii. The game could be played over Nintendo Network; however, the service was terminated on April 8, 2024, making the game no longer playable online.
