Origins. Lambeth was part of the large ancient parish of Lambeth St Mary, the site of the archiepiscopal Lambeth Palace, in the hundred of Brixton in the county of Surrey. [4] It was an elongated north–south parish with two miles (three kilometres) of River Thames frontage opposite the cities of London and Westminster.
The church is the oldest structure in the Borough of Lambeth, except for the crypt of Lambeth Palace itself, and its burials and monuments are a record of 950 years of community history. 1062. A wooden church is built on the site of the Garden Museum by Goda, sister of Edward the Confessor; the Doomsday Book records 29 tenancies in her manor.
