Known as the Duchess of Richmond’s Ball, it was to become one of the most famous parties in history. Napoleon had escaped from exile on Elba and was now restored to power in France.

She was one of 14 children who made up the large and unruly Lennox family. The Lennoxes were plagued by money troubles but nonetheless enjoyed the aristocratic lifestyle of the day.

Georgy first met the Duke on his return from India when he was serving under her father the Duke of Richmond who was then Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.
Lady Georgiana Lennox, known to her family as Georgy and to Wellington as his ‘dearest Georgy’, was a younger daughter of the 4 th Duke of Richmond. Her mother, the Duchess of Richmond, is perhaps best known to history as the hostess of the famous ball held in Brussels on the 15 th June 1815, where Wellington received notice that the French forces were advancing.

His wife Georgina Lennox, by Thomas Gainsborough. Lord Bathurst married Lady Georgiana, daughter of Lord George Henry Lennox, in April 1789.
