The CW's Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover features an enviable lineup of TV superheroes, including both Arrowverse mainstays and fan-favorites like Tom Welling's Clark Kent and Kevin Conroy's Bruce Wayne. But the crossover also features a major villain making their return to the Arrowverse stage. Jon Cryer's Lex Luthor is alive and well, and he's already made a big impact on the DC multiverse.

While The CW has been building towards Crisis for a long time, apparently those plans didn't always include Lex Luthor. Cryer revealed that Crisis was never part of the original contract when he signed on to play Luthor in Supergirl's fourth season. "I had originally been told that I was going to be in three episodes, and that that was it. That Lex was going to die at the end of that season and, 'Thanks for playing.'"

But as Cryer explains, this was mostly due to uncertainty regarding how much the network would be allowed to utilize the character. He told us, "I think it was kind of an experiment because, the features side of Warners was unsure if they were going to have a Lex Luthor character in the next Superman movie, so they obviously didn't want to step on the toes of the features department."

Whether because WB has pumped the brakes on future Superman movies or simply because The CW is being given free rein with the character, it seems Cryer's initial stint as Luthor has opened the door to more appearances. And Cryer was all too happy to reprise the role for Crisis.

"Everybody got into it with an excess of caution," said Cryer. "It was working so well from day one. We just knew it. And that fans embraced the character just meant so much to me because when I was announced, there was some skepticism, let's say, on the Internet. Understandable skepticism, frankly, because I'm not known for playing supervillains. But that the fans gave me a chance, I'm incredibly grateful for."

As the second chapter of Crisis shows, Lex isn't allowing a little thing like the impending destruction of the multiverse to get in the way of his quest to destroy Superman. Gaining access to the Book of Destiny simply gives Lex the tool he needs to finally realize his dream.

"He is looking out for number one," said Cryer. "He's already calculated exactly where this is going. If the entire universe is shredded, and his existence is completed, well okay, that's fine. But if there's any possible way to eke out of this alive, he will find that way and he will destroy Superman and Supergirl when he gets the chance."

At the same time, Cryer says Lex has been affected by his death at the end of Supergirl: Season 4, however brief it was. If anything, that death has only accentuated Lex's worst traits.

"He has come back from that knowing that dead is a way he never wants to be again. He's seen the worst of it, and he wants no part of it. So it made his sociopathy even more acute."

Crisis Part 2 features a major Superman crossover as Lex's Kryptonian murder spree takes him to Earth-176, home of Smallville's Clark Kent. But it's here Lex meets his match in the form of a de-powered Man of Steel, one more interested in raising a family than saving the world or rising to Lex's bait.

As a self-professed Smallville fan, Cryer said it was a huge honor to play a part in closing the door on that particular superhero universe. "I think the writing on that show, and the performances on that show redefined what you could do with superheroes on television. I still think Mike Rosenbaum is the definitive Lex on TV, and arguably, the definitive Lex. Obviously, they were going for something different in Smallville in terms of creating a much more sympathetic Lex Luthor than has been in the comics for a long time. But it was a real achievement on his part."

Cryer continued, "But the Lex that [Clark] meets in this is a different Lex, a much more sociopathic Lex. He's much less conflicted... Because he retains his basic nature, Clark is able to handle Lex, but it's a different Lex."

This encounter with Welling's Clark Kent also reveals an interesting truth about this Lex Luthor. Even he's capable of becoming blinded by his own arrogance and hubris, to the point where he refuses to accept the possibility that his world's Superman could also be Clark Kent.

Lex may have lost some of his fight after getting humiliated by the hero of Smallville, but he's not done plotting against Superman. Nor has he fulfilled his ultimate role in the crossover. Cryer teased that fans won't be expecting the swerve Lex's character arc takes in upcoming episodes.

"His encounter with the Smallville Clark changes his tactics," said Cryer. "And he does tend to realize that it doesn't make sense to keep doing this when, in all likelihood, maybe Superman will be killed by the antimatter wave. The part that Lex does play is really surprising. It is not what I saw in a million years for the part that Lex plays in saving the universe. That's all that I can say. That the Monitor is correct, he is necessary, but not in a way I expected at all."

Unfortunately, Cryer wasn't able to reveal whether we might see a family reunion between Lex and Lena during the crossover.

We did ask if Cryer would be interested in appearing in the recently announced Superman & Lois spinoff series. While he couldn't say much given that we don't even know if Lex will survive the events of Crisis, he did voice his enthusiasm for the spinoff and the next phase of Superman's journey in the Arrowverse.

"All I can say is, it's absolutely a show I will watch, but I have no idea," said Cryer. "It was very funny because I was shooting the very last of the crossover stuff, and I was under the impression that Tyler [Hoechlin] was done, and I get out of the plane, and there's Tyler. It was right after they had announced his show, and I was like, 'Oh, my God! Wait, what does this mean?' But it's so funny because, I don't know what it means. Nobody has said a word to me about that show."

Look for Cryer's Lex Luthor to return in the third part of Crisis on Infinite Earths, which will premiere on Tuesday, December 10 at 8pm EST.
