Foi um sacerdote da Igreja Anglicana que, por meio de uma busca profundíssima, no estudo, na oração, na meditação e contemplação das coisas de Deus, terminou por ingressar à Casa de Deus e integrar o Corpo Místico de Cristo, a Igreja Católica Apostólica Romana.

John Henry Newman was a Fellow of Oriel College, Oxford, from 1822 until 1845. The story of Newman at Oriel represented a major dimension of his spiritual pilgrimage and intellectual development. As he himself later recorded, he ever felt the day of his election as Fellow of Oriel on 12 April 1822 ‘to be the turning point of his life, and of all days most memorable.
