Mansfield wrote ‘Je ne parle pas français’ while she was in Bandol in the south of France in 1918, while Prelude was being printed by Virginia and Leonard Woolf. Two years later, the story appeared in a privately printed edition, hand-printed this time by John Middleton Murry and his younger brother Richard.
