Leven. James Stirling studeerde van 1945 tot 1950 architectuur aan de Universiteit van Liverpool. In 1956 richtte hij met James Gowan het architectenbureau Stirling and Gowan op. Stirling had passed no exams, but his art work and the backing of the school got him accepted at the School of Art in Liverpool. He combined studying there part-time from 1940–41 with work in an architect's office. He volunteered for military service in 1942 and was commissioned in 1943.

In making the announcement, Jay A. Pritzker, president of the Hyatt Foundation, which administers and funds the prize, presented the 55-year-old Stirling with a check for $100,000.
