Stevens, who had a strong interest in Islam prior to recording the album, formally converted to Islam later in the year and adopted the name Yusuf Islam in 1978, by which time the album Back to Earth would be released and Islam had essentially retired from the music business.

On 4 July 1978, Steven Georgiou changed his name to Yusuf Islam. Although he wanted to retire from popular music after his religious conversion, Islam owed his record company Island/ A&M one more "Cat Stevens" album under his recording contract.

By the time of its release he had embraced the Muslim faith and changed his name to Yusuf Islam. The album saw the return of Alun Davies on guitar, Gerry Conway on drums, and producer Paul Samwell-Smith, all of whom had been absent from the previous album, Izitso.

The success of Izitso showed the label that he was still hit-worthy, but Stevens was now in process of embracing the faith of Islam, and after supplying the album Back to Earth, he opted out of the music business altogether, changed his name to Yusuf Islam, and devoted himself to the Islamic faith, education, and humanitarian work.
