Leon Edel, possibly the most renowned and respected James scholar, has indicated that James’s mature writing can be divided into three periods (with three subdivisions in the middle phase).
In this course, we will survey the work of Henry James with a particular emphasis on the value of James’ stylistic innovation. Beyond building a vocabulary for talking about style in general and Jamesian style in particular, this course will try to understand style’s power and utility.
