Henry James was an American writer, who turned into a British resident in the most recent year of his life. He is viewed as a key transitional figure between scholarly authenticity and artistic innovation. He is considered by numerous individuals to be among the best authors in the English language.

His most famous works included The Portrait of a Lady (1881), The Bostonians (1886), and The Ambassadors (1903). Many of his tales, including “The Figure in the Carpet” (1896) and The Turn of the Screw (1898), are still widely read.

Course Description: The late critic Tzvetan Todorov once praised Henry James for exploring more thoroughly than any other author “paths opened by language but unknown to literature.” In this course, we will survey the work of Henry James with a particular emphasis on the value of James’ stylistic innovation.

Leon Edel, possibly the most renowned and respected James scholar, has indicated that James’s mature writing can be divided into three periods (with three subdivisions in the middle phase).
