George Canning (born April 11, 1770, London, Eng.—died Aug. 8, 1827, Chiswick, near London) was a British statesman known for his liberal policies as foreign secretary (1807–09, 1822–27) and as prime minister for four months during 1827.

He served as Foreign Secretary 1830–1834, 1835–1841, and 1846–1851. In this office, Palmerston responded effectively to a series of conflicts in Europe.

After succeeding George IV as king, William proved to be less brilliant but also less selfish and more attentive to official business than his brother had been.
