A worn copper-alloy medal depicting Canning. In 1827, Liverpool was forced to stand down as Prime Minister after suffering a severe stroke. He died the following year. Canning, as Liverpool's right-hand man, was chosen by George IV to succeed him, in preference to the Duke of Wellington or Sir Robert Peel. [57]

William was Commander of the Royal Navy ship Alligator and was drowned in 1828 while bathing at Madeira. He was buried in the East Cloister, near the south gates, but the stone was not inscribed.
