Daisy dies of the Roman fever soon after, and is buried in Rome. Not long after that Winterbourne returns to Geneva, but he comes back to Vevay to visit his aunt the next year, where he reflects that he misunderstood Daisy, and that she would have appreciated his esteem.

Only after she dies does Winterbourne recognize that her actions reflected her spontaneous, genuine, and unaffected nature and that his suspicions of her were unwarranted. Like others of James’s works, Daisy Miller uses the contrast between American innocence and European sophistication as a powerful tool with which to examine social conventions.
A few days after this, Daisy catches the Roman fever, which causes her death. Three times during a period of consciousness, Daisy sent Winterborne a message that he could only interpret at a later date. He realized that Daisy was a very innocent girl who would have welcomed someone's esteem.
