A história da Fórmula E começou em setembro de 2014, com a realização da primeira corrida, em Pequim. A categoria foi fundada pelo espanhol Alejandro Agag, que segue como CEO. A proposta de um campeonato de carros elétricos e provas disputadas na cidade foi concebida por Jean Todt, presidente da Federação Internacional do Automóvel (FIA).
