The family stems from the village of Merode in what is now Germany. Merode is located in the vicinity of the city of Düren, which lies between Aachen and Köln and was once part of the Duchy of Jülich. Today, it is part of the municipality of Langerwehe in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

They acquired their noble status by playing an important role in the history of the Spanish Netherlands as well as during the Belgian Revolution, which lead to the creation of modern day Belgium. The Merode coat of arms derives from the one of the Counts of Barcelona.

Family. Merode was born in Carthage, Tunisia. He is the second son of Charles-Guillaume, Prince de Merode and Princess Hedwige Marie de Ligne-La Trémoïlle. His parents [citation needed] belong to two of Belgium's historically most ancient and influential families, the Houses of Merode and Ligne.
30 de mai. de 2011 · La famille des princes de Merode. Les premières traces des Merode remontent à 1050 dans la région de Rhénanie-Westphalie entre Cologne et Aix-la-Chapelle. Une partie de la famille est ensuite arrivée en Belgique et s’est installée au château de Westerloo (qui appartient toujours aux Merode).
