Origin. The family stems from the village of Merode in what is now Germany. Merode is located in the vicinity of the city of Düren, which lies between Aachen and Köln and was once part of the Duchy of Jülich. Today, it is part of the municipality of Langerwehe in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

They acquired their noble status by playing an important role in the history of the Spanish Netherlands as well as during the Belgian Revolution, which lead to the creation of modern day Belgium.
