Edwards was living in Kentucky, where he moved with his wife in 2000, when DNA evidence linked him to the Wisconsin murders. When confronted by police, Edwards started talking and didn't stop until he confessed to the five murders.

Edwards used letters from his 13 letter name “Edward Edwards” and his wife “Kay Edwards” name and made symbols in mirror image as part of the cipher. The K in the puzzle equaled E for Kay Edwards. The Zodiac sign equaled D as it did in the solved three part cipher sent a year earlier.
