  5. Biography. Lord Cornbury was named after his grandfather, the 1st Earl of Clarendon (Edward†). During the 1680s, Cornbury judged it best to swim with the stream, finding early favour with his uncle, James II, but being among the first army officers to desert to William III in 1688.
