El duque de Wellington (1769-1852) fue un general al mando de las fuerzas británicas que lucharon en España durante la guerra de la Independencia y venció a las tropas francesas de José Bonaparte en la batalla de Vitoria, en 1813. Goya pintó este retrato en Madrid, durante la breve estancia del Duque en la ciudad.

Análisis artístico. Parece ser que este dibujo fue realizado como estudio preparatorio del retrato de busto del duque de Wellington pintado por Goya en 1812 y conservado hoy en la National Gallery de Londres.
Historia. This painting, which was made as a private portrait for the sitter and probably served as model for the large equestrian portrait, belonged to the Duke of Wellington himself. It later went to Louisa Catherine Caton, wife of the VII Duke of Leeds, in whose collection it remained until 1878.
