27 de ago. de 2021 · ‘The Grand Old Duke of York’ is one of the oldest known English nursery rhymes, thought to date back to the 1600s. It’s not certain who wrote the words or accompanying music heard today, but it was published in Arthur Rackham’s 1913 Mother Goose collection of nursery rhymes.

The Grand Old Duke of York has an unclear history. The first lyrics of the song from 1642 are only two lines. No Duke is present in the lines since the song refers to Napoleon of France. This version is often called Old Tarlton’s song. The name refers to a French clown who went by the name Richard Tarlton.
