He died at Walmer Castle in Kent in 1852 and was given the honour of a State Funeral. It was a magnificent affair, a fitting tribute to a great military hero. The Iron Duke is buried in St. Paul’s Cathedral next to another British hero, Admiral Lord Nelson. Wellington’s mother could not have been more wrong about her youngest son!

Arthur Wellesley, 1st duke of Wellington, (born May 1, 1769, Dublin, Ire.—died Sept. 14, 1852, Walmer Castle, Kent, Eng.), British general. Son of the Irish earl of Mornington, he entered the army in 1787 and served in the Irish Parliament (1790–97). Sent to India in 1796, he commanded troops to victories in the Maratha War (1803).

Situated at the southern-western end of Park Lane in London, the Wellington Monument is a statue representing Achilles as a memorial to the 1st Duke of Wellington. Inaugurated on 18 June 1822, the 36-ft high memorial by sculptor Richard Westmacott was made out of melted-down captured enemy cannon.
